Lake Lochmoor

In response to growing concern about the spread of invasive weeds in and around Lake Lochmoor, several residents joined together in early 2020 with the common goal of developing a management plan for the lake.  As part of this effort, they met with several different contractors to discuss various aquatic weed and algae control strategies.  Ultimately, Blue Water Aquatics, Inc. (BWA) was selected and contract terms agreed upon.  The group then reached out to Marion Township officials to discuss next steps including the all-important question of how to pay for the lake treatments.  To ensure equitable cost allocation, township officials suggested the creation of a special assessment district (SAD).  SADs are commonly used to fund lake management programs and have been implemented at several other locations throughout the township including Cedar Lake, Triangle Lake, & Coon Lake.

At the December 10, 2020 Marion Township Board of Trustees meeting, waterfront residents expressed overwhelming support for creation of the SAD.  There was also unanimous support from the Board of Trustees to schedule the required public hearings in order to establish the SAD.  Those hearings took place on January 14, 2021 and the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to create the Lake Lochmoor Special Assessment District (LLSAD) for a maximum term of five years.  It’s important to note

that LLSAD costs will only be assessed on the 26 Kingswood parcels identified as waterfront.  Under the terms of the LLSAD, Marion Township will only pay BWA after confirming the work was completed to our satisfaction.  Once we give our approval, the township will pay BWA and each parcel owner will see their share of the payment assessed on following winter tax bill.  To cover administrative costs, the township charges 5% interest that accrues from the time they pay the contractor until the day our winter tax bills are mailed.

Depending on the type and concentration of weeds, BWA may use a variety of products to achieve control.  Below, you'll find the tentative treatment schedule for 2025, a list of nuisance weeds/algae, and commonly used products that BWA may apply.  Please note that, at least 7 days prior to the first application of the year, SAD parcel owners will receive a notification regarding the upcoming treatments. BWA will also post a sign on each property owner's parcel on the day of treatment. Please read and follow any listed instructions (I.E. no swimming and/or no fishing for a specified amount of time).  Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the program. (Also, for mobile/cell users only, please see optimized web site on PC or Tablet for treatment schedule)
